New Zealand Derby favourite Jimmy Choux is on track for a unique double as he attempts to win his country’s richest race.
The Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) is worth $2.2 million.
Jimmy Choux is currently a very firm $2.80 favourite for the race, with He’s Remarkable and O’Reilly’s Prize the only other runners under double figures.
However, unlike other runners – including second favourite He’s Remarkable – who will be aimed at the Group 1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) after this, trainer John Bary has other ideas.
He wants to take his champion colt to the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).
No horse has ever won the New Zealand Derby-Doncaster Mile double.
Jimmy Choux has been New Zealand’s top 3yo colt this season, winning the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas (1600m) and a string of Group 2 and Group 3 races.
